Because each individual’s definition of mature content may differ, the following is a reflection of how books are categorized in the BSHS library:

CATEGORIES OF BSHS LIBRARY
Young Adult (YA) Literature Young Adult (YA) Literature includes fiction and nonfiction titles written and produced for readers generally ages 12-18, or in grades 7-12 in a style that primarily speaks the language of young adults. YA literature generally is characterized as having themes that resonate with the unique experiences and challenges faced by many adolescents. These titles often explore self-discovery and the transition to adulthood, providing readers with relatable narratives that may mirror their own journeys. The (typically) teenage protagonists frequently navigate the roller coaster of adolescence and may grapple with issues such as friendship, first love, or societal expectations. YA literature often emphasizes relatability and the exploration of common themes that matter to teenagers through the lens of teenage protagonists.

Adult Literature  Adult Literature includes fiction and nonfiction titles that are targeted at a more mature audience, typically 18 years and older (or grades 11 and up), who are ready for adult reading and may be seeking narratives that reflect the challenges, experiences, and complexities of adulthood. These titles often cover a broad range of sophisticated subjects and challenging themes. With crossover appeal to teens who are ready for more advanced reading, some books may explore real-world challenges, social issues, and sensitive topics in more detail than titles that are written for young adults. Adult literature often introduces readers to new authors and a wider literary landscape with thought-provoking content.

Mature Young Adult and
Adult Literature

Mature Young Adult (YA-M) and Mature Adult Literature include fiction and nonfiction titles that may include thought-provoking themes that push boundaries and explore real-world complexities. These titles often dive into complex issues or those that may be considered sensitive such as: abortion, abuse, assault, drug/alcohol use, mental health, sexual relationships, or violence, sometimes with stronger language or in more depth and description than other titles. While YA-M titles generally are written for teens ages 14-18, or in high school grades 9-12, Mature Adult titles often are targeted at a more mature audience, typically 18 years and older (or grades 11 and up).  Titles in the YA-M and Mature Adult Literature categories may mirror a teen’s own experiences or help readers build empathy by providing a window into experiences unlike their own.
