Course Selection and Change Request Process and Procedures
Boiling Springs High School recognizes that thoughtful course selection is an important part of a student’s academic planning. Students and families are encouraged to carefully review course options, graduation requirements, teacher recommendations, and future goals when selecting courses for the upcoming school year.
In the BSHS Educational Planning Guide, you can find detailed course descriptions, necessary prerequisites, weighting, and credit value for every course available. The planning guide also contains information regarding graduation requirements, grading, and special programs offered at BSHS.
The scheduling process requires time, careful review, and collaboration among students, parents/guardians, school counselors, teachers, and administration. Families can help support this process by reviewing schedules carefully, submitting course change request forms by the stated deadline, and providing complete and accurate information on all request forms.
Student course selections are used to build the annual master schedule, determine staffing needs, and balance class sizes. Therefore, course change requests are limited and must follow the established procedures below.
Course Selection
Students will have the opportunity to request their courses for the upcoming school year during the designated course selection window each year. The course selection process typically takes place during late February and early March each year. Specific dates and times for the selection window are determined by administrators and will be shared with students as available each year. BSHS families are encouraged to start exploring and discussing course options with your student(s) by early February.
Prior to the course selection window, students should:
| * |
Review the BSHS Educational Planning Guide and course descriptions.
|
| * |
Discuss course options with parents/guardians. |
| * |
Consider graduation requirements, career goals, college or post-secondary plans, and teacher recommendations. |
| * |
Schedule a meeting with their school counselor as needed for guidance. |
Once course selection worksheets are submitted, they are used to build student schedules and determine course availability
Requesting a Course Change
After schedules are created and available for review, course change requests may only be considered for specific reasons.
Carefully determine if the request meets course change criteria, such as:
| * |
A student is missing a graduation requirement. |
| * |
A student has already earned credit for the course. |
| * |
A student was scheduled for the wrong course level.
|
| * |
A student is missing a prerequisite or does not meet course requirements.
|
| * |
A student needs a schedule adjustment due to a documented academic need. |
| * |
A course change is needed due to an approved program change. (Dual Enrollment, CTC, internship, co-op, independent study, or open campus) |
*Dual enrollment courses cannot be added to student schedules until counselors receive proof of registration and payment.
*Internships or Co-Ops cannot be added to student schedules until counselors receive notification of approval from the Work Experience Coordinator.
*Open Campus and courses that require open campus permission will be removed from student schedules if counselors have not received the signed open campus form.
Requests based on teacher preference, lunch preference, block preference, or wanting to be with friends will not be considered.
Course Change Request Form
Students who wish to request a course change must complete the official Course Change Request Form. Please note that submitting the form does not guarantee that a change will be made. During designated course change request windows, the official request form can be found at the bottom of this webpage or in the high school counseling office. If the form does not appear, course changes cannot be accepted.
| * |
All requests will be reviewed by the Counseling Office and administration. |
| * |
Course changes are dependent on graduation requirements, course availability, class size, scheduling conflicts, and administrative approval.
|
| * |
Requests received after the communicated deadline may not be reviewed unless there is an extenuating circumstance, or the change is necessary to meet graduation requirements.
|
| * |
Students and families are encouraged to review schedules carefully when they become available and submit reasonable concerns as soon as possible. |
Final Approval
All course change requests must be reviewed and approved before any schedule changes are made.
Students should continue attending their current scheduled classes until a change is officially reflected in Sapphire, or they receive confirmation from the Counseling Office to begin attending a different class.
Summer Reminder
Please keep in mind that our school counselors operate on very limited summer office hours and work hard to support our Bubbler families all year. While counselors are not available for immediate assistance every day, they remain dedicated to reviewing and addressing requests as soon as possible. Due to limited summer availability and the high volume of student and family needs, our counselors will make every effort to respond to emails and requests within 10 business days of receipt.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as our team works carefully to support all students and families.
